Australian Institute of Conveyancers (AIC) Welcomes Conveyancing Reform

Author: Pauline Barrow CPC
Date: 2006-01-20

Pauline Barrow, Victorian President and National Vice President of the AIC welcomes the Government's long awaited announcement for reform of the Conveyancing Profession.

For too long Conveyancers have been unable to compete with lawyers on a level playing field. A recent Supreme Court trial, initiated by the Law Institute of Victoria as a Regulated Professional Association, taken against a Conveyancer saw what lengths the Lawyer's union was prepared to go to prevent Conveyancers from carrying out their profession. This action should send warning bells through government that the independence of Conveyancers is very important in legislating for the Profession.

The government's recommendations for sweeping changes gives a balanced view between cost effective reform and consumer protection and will enhance important projects undertaken by Victoria , such as electronic conveyancing. On a national level, Victoria will come into line with nationally accepted standards for Conveyancing.

For Consumers, the Governments decision will give Consumers increased protection, confidence and realize greater cost benefits.
